Originally I am from Johannesburg in South Africa. My husband Ian and I decided that Australia offered our kids a better future, so we came here six years ago. Ian is an Electrical Engineer and we now have two boys aged 3 and 6.

SA DEPUTY SMALL BUSINESS COMMISSIONER APPOINTMENT QUESTIONED
The South Australian government has announced that the author of its Small Business Commissioner legislation has been appointed to the role of Deputy Small Business Commissioner.
After an extended summer recess, the upper house of the Western Australian parliament is due to consider a new private member’s bill to legislate franchising in WA.
The bill was initially proposed late last year, less than a month after an almost identical private members bill was defeated in the lower house of parliament by one vote only a month earlier.

NEW FRANCHISE SURVEY TO BE RELEASED THIS YEAR
In 2010 discussions between FANZ, Auckland’s Massey University and Queensland’s Griffith University, led to the production of the first New Zealand survey based on the biennial Australian survey that had been established over a number of years. Franchising New Zealand 2010 provided a detailed and comprehensive report on the status of the NZ franchising sector and formed the base year in the planned New Zealand biennial series to follow.

Some initiatives - such as approaching a major employer who had announced major retrenchments with a specific franchising program – are somewhat reactive. Others are more proactive and structured.

FCA IS EDUCATING POTENTIAL FRANCHISEES
Education is emerging as a key theme for franchising in 2009.
This was apparent in the recent inquiries in franchising in WA and SA and the Federal inquiry in 2008.
Education was one of the most encouraging aspects of the earlier WA and SA Reports that each agreed with the FCA submission, pinpointing education as a key element of lifting sector performance and minimising disputes.
