On a roll: Brumby’s Bakery takes on “King of the Bakers” at the 2019 Toowoomba Royal Baking Show

The team from Brumby’s Bakery laughed all the way to the oven last week, taking home an impressive sweep of awards in the King of the Bakers competition at the 50th Toowoomba Royal Baking Show.

The annual bake-off event tempted a record number of exhibitors for its 50th anniversary, with over 700 entrants across 45 categories.

Brumby’s received seven awards across six classes, including the top spot for their renowned Ciabatta loaf, which also contributed to the major award category, the Homestyle Bake and Speciality Bread.

General Manager for Brumby’s Bakery David Dinnes says the nods of approval demonstrate the commitment from everyone to continue promoting the values of the brand.

“Baking fresh daily is so much more than a time commitment – it’s the handing down of principles and passion that have been continuously woven throughout all levels of the brand.

“Our training and product development teams imbue those beliefs into everything they do, and that is translated into the work by all our bakers and franchise partners in store. Our franchisees are our biggest ambassadors and we can’t thank them enough for how they’ll bring these recipes to life in their stores.

“While baking is an art form, the maker has to be offset by good tools. Quality is integral to our brand and without the support from our flour providers at Manildra Group, we wouldn’t have been able to achieve this acknowledgement.” – David Dinnes.

Professional bakers from across the country put their best crusts to the test before a panel of expert judges. Each entry was vetted for overall quality, with key areas of focus on the taste, aroma, texture, appearance and structure.

Urangan franchise partner Russell Johnson travelled all the way from Hervey Bay to compete, taking home multiple awards across several categories which included his signature sandwich grains.

“This is much more than just an award for us; this is recognition for the hard work our store puts in to bring our customers the best of the best,” says Russell.

Brumby’s Bakery was awarded:

  • Overall Winner – Homestyle Bake Best Speciality Bread
  • 1st Place – Ciabatta class
  • 2nd Place – Bun Loaf and 680g Multi-Grain classes
  • 3rd Place – Pasta Dura and Traditional Sourdough classes
  • 3rd Place – Toowoomba Cup, including the Rod and Helen Stirling Memorial Trophy, which covered 680g White, Multi-Grain and Wholemeal Sandwich classes.

The Brumby’s team are already planning their baking strategy ahead of the 2020 awards, setting their sights on the gold.
